Casinos today may call to mind an over-the-top Las Vegas strip, but it wasn’t always that way. The oldest casino in the world, the Casino di Venezia, sits on the Grand Canal in Venice.

Opened in 1638, it was originally a theatre called the Theatre Saint Moses, which had a wing for gambling during the intermissions of plays. It helped spark the start of a casino craze in Venice—by 1744, there were more than 120.

This Renaissance palace was initially built in the 15th century by Italian architect Mauro Codussi, who designed some of Venice’s most beautiful churches. It was commissioned by Italian nobleman Andrea Loredan, who was an art collector, and had ceiling frescoes and paintings made on its walls by Italian masters like Mattia Bortoloni, Palma il Giovane, and Gian Battista Crosato, many of which are still in place today.

The casino was initially called the Ca’ Vendramin Calergi; after its early days as a casino, it served as a home to Italian royalty, then became a frequent getaway for German composer Richard Wagner from 1858 until his death in 1883. The city of Venice bought the building in 1946, renovated it, and opened it as an official casino in 1959.

Today, there are hundreds of ways to gamble, from blackjack to roulette and poker, all hosted by dealers in tuxedos, alongside 600 slot machines and ongoing tournaments for pros, like the World Poker Tour. A free boat shuttle service ferries guests to the French-designed front doors of the casino.

The property features a restaurant called The Wagner, which honors the composer with classic Italian fare; a private garden overlooking the Grand Canal; and the Wagner Museum, which opened in 1995, tracing the creative life of the musician who lived here. Though it all began as a gathering place for thespians, it’s still a cultural hotspot: Claire Danes and Coolio are a few of the people who have partied at this casino.   It has been used for Hollywood movie sets and Venice Film Festival events, and was instrumental in the development of the movie Indeed, just like something out of a James Bond film, this dimly lit haunt is a gem of old-school Italian design, with felt ropes for handrails on its staircase, crystal chandeliers, and vintage mirrors made by Murano glassmakers.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Friday said the project would contribute to the economic growth of the Kansai area around Osaka and greater Japan after World Expo 2025, as the country aims for a post-pandemic rebound in tourist spending.

Japan is seen as a prized market for casino operators because of its affluent population of 126 million and proximity to Asia's wealthy gamblers, although opinion polls have shown many citizens worry about addiction and crime. The resort is targeting 520 billion yen of revenue annually, mostly from the gaming business, and forecasts it will attract 6 million international tourists and 14 million domestic visitors, the project document showed. MGM Resorts, Orix and Osaka's city and prefecture governments said they welcomed the approval and would work together to develop the project. The national government's decision came after the pro-casino Japan Innovation Party retained the prefectural governor and city mayor offices in Osaka on Sunday.

A Mainichi newspaper poll of Osaka residents this month found 45% of respondents in favour of the casino, 38% against and 17% undecided, although women and the elderly were more likely to be opposed.
